Symbiote Spider-Man’s battle with Hulk across dimensions left the Jade Giant with the same issue he encountered in the MCU.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Symbiote Spider-Man: Crossroads # 2, available now from Marvel.
Symbiote Spider-Man: Crossroads came back to a time when Peter Parker was still in possession of the Venom symbiote, and the second issue (from Peter David, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Frank D’Armata and Joe Sabino of VC) places the head of the web in the line The Incredible Hulk’s sights. Thankfully, Spider-Man is in possession of an item that gives him the power to take on the Raging Jade Giant, while subsequently forcing the Hulk to face a similar dilemma he faced in the MCU. , namely being stuck in the less potent form. by Bruce Banner.
Spider-Man was banished to the Crossroads via an interdimensional portal by the power of Karnilla, Queen of the Norns, after preventing one of his minions from stealing an artifact called the Norn Stone from a museum. He was then targeted by the Hulk, who had been exiled to the dimension by Doctor Strange after going on a rampage inspired by the mystical villain Nightmare. Spider-Man was able to engage the Hulk in battle after receiving the power of the Magic Stone, but the Artifact chose to leave Peter in search of a more powerful host. The stone then targets the Hulk, causing a very unexpected effect.
As the two Avengers face off against the hostile inhabitants of their strange new world, the Norn Stone plunges into the Hulk’s forehead, in pursuit of someone of limitless potential. However, instead of imbuing the already mighty green bully with even more power, the artifact instantly transforms him into the physically inferior form of Bruce Banner.
The limitless potential that the stone smells in Banner sadly leaves the medic helpless against the forces of the Crossroads, as he is then unceremoniously knocked out. It’s very similar to what the Hulk experienced in the movie. Avengers: Infinity War, when after being severely beaten by Thanos, Banner got stuck in his less powerful human form.
The Norn Stone isn’t entirely sensitive, but she has her own mind and it’s unclear what she has in store for Bruce Banner. One can only assume that Stone found a strength in Banner that the Hulk cannot draw upon, presumably his intellect, although that did not seem to help him much in his brutal new reality.
Nonetheless, the Norn Stone has always chosen it, which suggests that there is more at stake here than it seems. Either way, it at least gave Banner a respite from his terrifying alter ego, although in such a hostile environment it could be more of a hindrance than a help.
