Reuse stores to reopen at Monmouthshire recycling centers

TWO reuse shops in a pair of recycling centers in Monmouthshire will reopen next week.

Reuse stores at Llanfoist and Five Lanes recycling centers will both reopen the week of March 14.

This year the shop opening days have changed, with Llanfoist Reuse Shop now open Tuesdays 10am-3pm and Five Lanes Reuse Shop open Wednesdays 10am-3pm.

Monmouthshire County Council reuse shops sit alongside Five Lanes Recycling Center in Caerwent and Llanfoist Recycling Center near Abergavenny and offer salvaged items at great prices.

Stock for both stores comes from items collected by dedicated teams working in the centres, intercepting safe and useful items as they come out of car trunks before throwing them into dumpsters.

One of the highlights of last year’s work was the rescue of a rare 1930s Mickey Mouse toy, which has now been donated to a local museum.

Not all discoveries are equally rare, but they are all important and help reduce waste.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming customers and volunteers back to the stores,” said Rebecca Blount, Reuse and Recycling Manager.

“Our store’s stock is constantly changing as more and more items are saved from being thrown away.

“Items like coffee tables are great for a bit of upcycling with a coat of paint or wax, while chairs could provide an upholstery project.”

“Reuse Shops are part of Monmouthshire’s thriving circular economy.

“Every time we buy a used item we make a difference, so why buy new when there is a range of exciting, original and vintage products here?”

Since the Llanfoist Reuse Shop opened in June 2019, it is estimated that over 19,500 items have been saved from dumpsters and the proceeds have helped fund the planting of over 12,000 trees in Monmouthshire.

With funding from the Welsh Government, the Five Lanes Reuse Shop opened in the summer of 2021 and, like the store in Llanfoist, it relies on the support of the local community.

Proceeds from the reuse shops support Monmouthshire County Council’s wider tree planting programme.

This helps in the fight against climate change and reduces council waste disposal costs.

This summer, the Five Lanes Reuse Shop will also be selling compost/soil amendment at £2 a bag.
