D&S Morgan 2021 Silver Dollars Release

Two of the most anticipated numismatic releases of the year come today after a delay from their initial scheduled appearance on June 1. At noon (ET), and likely available shortly thereafter, the United States Mint will begin accepting pre-orders for the Morgan 2021-D Silver Dollar and the Morgan 2021-S Silver Dollar.

2021-D Morgan Silver Dollar (obverse and reverse)

Both are minted from 0.858 troy oz. .999 fine silver to an uncirculated finish at the Denver and San Francisco Coins, respectively.

These silver dollars are one of six donated by the US Mint to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the transition from Morgan dollars to peace dollars. The coins were authorized by Public Law 116-286, the Silver Coin Anniversary Act of 1921.

In May, the Mint offered for pre-order the Morgan Silver Dollar 2021 with a private label CC (Carson City) and the Morgan Silver Dollar 2021 with a private label O (New Orleans) as the first two of the associated six dollars. Their launch, however, was fraught with problems, as US Mint customers encountered several website issues when they tried to pre-order. Recognizing the issues, the Mint first postponed and then announced subsequent pre-order dates for the remaining four dollars, with two for today and the final two within a week.

“During the initial pre-order window for Morgan & Peace dollars, the Mint experienced an extraordinarily high volume of BOT traffic. These BOTs were programmed to perform technology-driven transactions that caused significant interference with many transactions by customers of the Mint, “the United States Mint explained in part. “The Mint has now identified a solution that we believe will alleviate most of the problems caused by BOT traffic.”

In addition, the Mint has reduced the household limits for every dollar to three instead of ten.

All of this brings us to today’s offer of the Morgan Silver Dollars 2021-D and 2021-S, two months and two days past the originally scheduled date. Assuming a relatively smooth start, the Mint expects a final 2021 Morgan and 2021 Peace Dollar to follow on the 10th. Both will be produced in Philadelphia but will not bear a mintmark.

Morgan Dollar 2021 Designs and Specifications

The law allowing these coins requires that they feature patterns similar to those of Morgans over a century old. As such, the Mint scanned its historic assets using modern technology to recreate the designs for 2021. The US Mint’s chief engraver, George T. Morgan, created the original work that appeared. on silver dollars from 1878 to 1904, then again in 1921. It was for his work that these coins took their nickname.

On the obverse (heads side) of each is Lady Liberty in profile. A cap, flora and crown encrusted with the word “LIBERTY” adorn its head, while 13 stars, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the date of issue surround it.
